Being Present Matters

Did you know that nearly 15 million kids are chronically absent from school each year in the U.S.? There are numerous reasons that cause students to miss school, including lack of access to basic needs, transportation issues, childcare needs for siblings, housing insecurity, or lack of mental health and anti-bullying support.

CIS knows that the presence of a site coordinator can change everything. We provide added support to schools in the form of site coordinators who work one-on-one with students to ensure they have what they need to engage in learning.

The results are evident - when CIS is in schools, 99% of our students stay in school. Continue reading to learn how we’re showing up and ensuring ALL students have the support they need to attend school and realize their full potential!

Who We Are

We are the bridge connecting students to caring adults and community resources that help them see, confront, and overcome the barriers that stand between them and a brighter future.

Why We Exist

Communities In Schools fuels personal potential, so every student can take charge of their story and define their success for life

What We Believe

Communities In Schools believes that transformative relationships are key to unlocking a student’s potential. We break down immediate and systemic barriers to create and sustain equitable outcomes for students and their families.

Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Communities In Schools of Glynn County is an affiliate of the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization.

By bringing caring adults into schools to address children’s unmet needs, CIS provides the link between educators and the community. The result: teachers are free to teach, and students, many in jeopardy of dropping out, have the opportunity to focus on learning.

Communities In Schools of Glynn County works hard to ensure that every child receives these “Five Basics”:

  • A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult

  • A safe place to learn and grow

  • A healthy start and a healthy future

  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation

  • A chance to give back to peers and community

"CIS was the only constant in my life and it was my safe place. It was the reason I looked forward to going to school the next day. It was them pushing me to keep going and them showing me that they really cared that stood out and made a difference from anything else I was going through at the time."

-Mikereece Duncan, CIS + Brunswick High School graduate and recipient of the 2021 Communities In Schools David T. Smith, Jr. Scholarship
