CONGRATULATIONS

to our
February Employee of the Month

Alexandra Helgesen!

Alexandra is our Immigrant Student Support Specialist and Case Manager and travels to many of our schools to serve our immigrant students and their families. Her program managers have designated her as the winner for the month of February as "she consistently goes above and beyond to bridge the communication gap between the schools and our Spanish-speaking families. Alex is an amazing part of our team, and we are so blessed to have her!"

When asked what Alexandra loved about working with CIS of Glynn, she said, "The best part of my job is that I get to make a difference in so many kids lives." And she most definitely does!

Alexandra's fun facts are that she grew up in Colombia and Spanish is her first language. She is a proud mother of two teenagers, and her oldest is a freshman at UGA. She loves to travel, exercise and Orchids are are favorite flowers; She can not get too many of them.”

Contribute to our kids through our
Annual Campaign.

Take a moment to view our 2022-2023 Annual Report on all the incredible milestones that CIS of Glynn has achieved this past school year, despite still facing the impacts of the pandemic and the personal challenges our students experience each day.

Our growth and achievements would not be possible without the generous funding from our donors and organizations that support our mission: to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Who We Are

We are the bridge connecting students to caring adults and community resources that help them see, confront, and overcome the barriers that stand between them and a brighter future.

Why We Exist

Communities In Schools fuels personal potential, so every student can take charge of their story and define their success for life

What We Believe

Communities In Schools believes that transformative relationships are key to unlocking a student’s potential. We succeed by including principles and practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, we break down immediate and systemic barriers to create and sustain equitable outcomes.

Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Communities In Schools of Glynn County is an affiliate of the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization.

By bringing caring adults into schools to address children’s unmet needs, CIS provides the link between educators and the community. The result: teachers are free to teach, and students, many in jeopardy of dropping out, have the opportunity to focus on learning.

Communities In Schools of Glynn County works hard to ensure that every child receives these “Five Basics”:

  • A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult

  • A safe place to learn and grow

  • A healthy start and a healthy future

  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation

  • A chance to give back to peers and community

"CIS was the only constant in my life and it was my safe place. It was the reason I looked forward to going to school the next day. It was them pushing me to keep going and them showing me that they really cared that stood out and made a difference from anything else I was going through at the time."

-Mikereece Duncan, CIS + Brunswick High School graduate and recipient of the 2021 Communities In Schools David T. Smith, Jr. Scholarship
